Working for the Lord doesn’t pay much, but the retirement benifits are out of this world!

En 'n grappie met 'n les daarin:
A rich guy tried to “take it with him” into the afterlife, in the form of gold bars. When Saint Peter saw that, he was slightly offended. “Did you think we wouldn’t have have enough stones to pave our streets?” he asked.

Auk Retha ek weetie so mooi daarvan nie.
"Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's." (Psalm 103:2-5)

Hy betaal ook nie te vrot nie:
"And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways. And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee. And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee. The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow. And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them: (Deut 28:2-13)

Groetnis

Henry

Mmmmmm.

Liewe vriende

Dit was bedoel as n kompliment wat sinspeel of Paulus se frase 'fools for Christ' en sy idees oor dwaasheid as wysheid in 1 Korintiers 2ev.

Hier's n paar aanhalings uit die 'Sayings of the Desert Fathers' (topical collection):

An old man said: 'Make yourself in many things a fool by fleeing the company of men and mocking the things of this world.'

Three monks once came to see an old sage and they lacked humility. The first bragged: 'Abba, I have memorised the entire Old and New Testaments', to which the old man replied sadly: 'You have filled the air with words'. The second boasted: 'I have copied both Old and New Testaments with my own hand', and the old man looked unimpressed as he said: 'You have filled the window-ledge with manuscripts'. The third said proudly: 'The grass is growing up my chimney (I live completely alone), and the old man lamented: 'And you have driven away hospitality.'

Abba Poemen said: 'Wickedness cannot drive out wickedness. If anyone hurts you, do good and you will drive out the evil.'

Abba Hyperichius said: 'The tree of life is lofty, and humility climbs it.'

Abba Macarius, when in Egypt, found a man who brought a beast to his cave and was stealing his possessions. As though he was a traveller who did not live there, he went up to the thief and helped him load the beast, and peaceably led him on his way saying: 'We brought nothing into this world; but the Lord gave, as he willed, so it is done: blessed be the Lord in all things.'

Abba Anthony said: 'If you can consider poverty as riches, hunger as a friend, blame as praise, and yourself as nothing, you will never die.'

A great ruler once came to visit a sage in the desert but he was doing it only for show. He asked the wise old man many questions but the hermit remained silent. Later on the ruler left without having gained a single answer to his questions. One of the other monks heard what had happened and came to visit the sage to ask him why he said nothing. To this the sage replied: 'If he isn't edified by my silence, there's no hope he'll be edified by my words.'

Abba Poemen said: 'The mark of a true monk only appears under temptation.'

Abba Evagrius said there was a brother who owned no possessions except a Gospel, and he sold it to feed the poor. He said a word worth remembering: 'I have sold even the word which commands me to sell all and give to the poor.'

Some philosophers came to argue with one of the hermits but he refused to speak to them. After a while they left him and one of them said: 'The old man is a fool.' To this the hermit replied: 'Can you imagine what travail I have endured in different desserts to attain this folly? And you are making me lose it all in one day.'

An old man said: 'The prophets wrote books; our fathers came after them and lived them. But this generation copies them on parchment and leaves them in the window-ledge for show.'

Abba Allois said: 'Unless a monk says in his heart 'Only I and God are in the world', he shall not find rest.'

A sage gave some of the young monks instruction from Scripture. After reading the texts he asked the monks what it meant. One by one they gave answers so as to impress their master but each time the old man said: 'No, you have not found the way.' One of the monks, however, responded each time by saying: 'I don't know'. And to this the old man replied: 'My son, you have found the true way.'

Abba Evagrius said: 'The beginning of salvation is to contradict yourself.'

Some dignitaries came to find Abba Moses who was known for his humility. On their way to his cave they came across a old man and asked them the way thereto. He said to them: 'Why do you want to see Moses? He is a fool and a heretic!' They ignored him and continued on their journey but could not find the cave. On their return they found some monks and told them what the stranger said about abba Moses. When the monks heard their description of the person in question they realised that it was abba Moses himself and that he wished to flee the praise of men. The monks then told the visitors what had happened and they went on their way, much edified.

A monk once asked a sage: 'Why is it that some claim to have seen angels?' The old man replied: 'Blessed is he who sees his own sin.'

Abba Joseph asked abba Poemen: 'Tell me how to become a monk.' The old man said: 'If you want to find rest in this life and the next, say at every turn 'Who am I?' and judge no man.'

An old man said: 'What is it like to be a monk? He answered his own question by saying: 'To be a monk is to be alone with the Alone.'

Abba Paul once said: 'Sometimes a text enters the heart of a monk as he sits in his cave. And the brother, if his heart is not pure, will inwardly meditate on the text but will not understand its true meaning. Then demons come and provide him with whatever meaning suits them.'

One of the hermits went to visit his brother to complain of suffering from temptation. To this the old man replied: 'Go back to your cave and meditate on the truth that you have been dead for many years, and so you will find peace.'
